So. That had apparently worked. Well, almost. At least this Rani lioness seemed to like ‘Nirvana’ more than Mufasa’s pride rat and his colorful friends. And she was the leader of a pride? But she couldn’t be older than Kovu, even with all of the training Zira’s daughter could recognize in her. A sharp feeling prickled her sunset-colored fur. What was it? Confusion? Jealousy? Pfft, no way. She wasn’t Nuka.
But it was...cool that this brownish cub was in charge of a pride, at her age. Vitani knew she and Kovu were still int raining, but she also knew that her parents were right all along. Of course she and her tufted brother could be trusted with much more, whereas Pridelanders coddled their cubs.
Unless Rani was lying. Violet eyes cast another quick glance at the lioness’s face. If she was, she was as good at it as Vitani herself. But if she wasn’t...Mother would definitely like to hear about this. A Pride from distant lands who knew how to train their cubs? They could be useful if they wised up and came under Scar’s leadership.
Vitani’s ears almost flicked up as she strained to hear the whispered conversation going on suddenly between Kion and the others. She remembered just in time to keep them flat. After all, Nirvana was a wimpy, frightened lioness and she had to keep the act up. But she managed to catch a word or two and made a quick decision.
”Don’t bother!” she bleated, making sure to throw a little shake—like Nuka when he talked to Mother—into her voice at the end. Couldn’t sneer like she normally did—Nirvana wasn’t confident. ”I-I knew I wouldn’t be welcome with King Mufasa’s pride, anyway!”
Without another word, Vitani let her face crumple and spun around, scrambling through the brambles. As she did, she got one last look at Rani and tossed a final, despairing expression at the lioness. It was disgusting to have to crawl away with her tail between her legs like some hyena...but if Zira had taught her anything, it was how to trick one’s prey.
A mighty huntress analyzed her food for it’s weaknesses before she pounced. Rani seemed like a softy at heart—she’d responded so well to the whole Nirvana act. Vitani could use that part of the new cub now to try and use the better parts, like her judgement of Mufasa and her training, for Scar and Zira later. If Rani could start to think of Mufasa like he was pompous and outcasted cubs—which he was, from everything Mother had said—then she might just join the right team in the end. It wouldn’t be so bad to have a huntress who knew how to carry herself by her side. Even if she didn’t chase after Nirvana now out of pity, Vitani was confident she’d given herself an opportunity to do this again sometime. Maybe playing pretend like dumber kids wasn’t so useless after all.
Besides, Vitani considered with a crooked smile as she scrambled back toward the Outlands, didn’t Kovu eventually need a Queen one day? Making their pride bigger by merging it with this ‘Night Pride’ to stomp Mufasa would be awesome.
