While at first he attempted to discredit his brother in their father's eyes, and thus prove he was better suited to be king, when one such attempt nearly robbed him of his left eye, he changed his name to Scar as a reminder to himself of his failure. But, his ambition wasn't dampened. Realizing Mufasa would be king regardless of whether or not Ahadi approved of him, Scar decided that Mufasa would have to be killed. To that end, he began organizing a conspiracy with a group of hyenas, and later a lioness, Zira, who became utterly devoted to him. The birth of his nephew Simba accelerated his plans, and he tried to have his nephew killed, only for the hyenas to botch their attempt when Mufasa showed up. Mufasa would then find himself the target of Scar's plans, and he was lured into a trap, with Simba as the bait. Everything was going perfectly until a strange creature appeared, and thwarted his attempt to kill Mufasa just as he had his brother's fate in his claws. While he escaped death, he was banished from the Pridelands, a judgment he didn't dispute. Zira, ever devoted, joined him in exile, and the pair were sent into exile in the Outlands. However, Scar, far from defeated, soon took an interest in the wider world beyond his old home, exploring beyond the boundaries of the Outlands while Zira birthed two cubs. The first, Nuka, was an utter disappointment, scrawny and mentally lacking. Vitani, second born, was strong willed and cunning, but Scar wanted an heir. A male heir. Even if he had to find one to claim for himself. Shortly after plunking Kovu down in Zira's paws to nurse alongside alongside Vitani, to be raised as their son and his chosen heir, he led his family beyond the Outlands, recruiting more animals into a sizable force and learning more about the brewing conflict. Shenzi, now matriarch of her clan, was among the first to join the black-maned exile. Seeing an opportunity, he led his forces to Maleficent's castle, and brokered a deal with her, earning an exalted rank within her forces in exchange for the allegiance of himself and his followers.
