Strong, protective, noble. That’s… not Mzuka, at least, not exactly. Mzuka has always found himself feeling at odds with his peers. He’s sensitive. He’s not very strong. He’s certainly not very intimidating, either. In so many words, he’s “trying to be butch.” That’s not to say he’s overly feminine, but traditional masculinity has just never been his game. But what he lacks in brawn, he does make up for in brains. He's very perceptive, as well as dexterous -- his senses are pretty darn keen. At the end of the day, Mzuka is very much a social animal. He hates being on his own while trying to establish his own pride, hungering for companionship, but his more timid nature is a bit of a hindrance when trying to assert himself. He is wholly good-natured, however, and tries to communicate his feelings clearly and honestly. Mzuka's greatest passion is storytelling. The one benefit to being on his own is learning the lay of the land, and hearing different tales from different groups. He has also thought up many stories of his own, giving creative explanations to things such as where the rain comes from, or how a lion got its mane. Part of this interest stemmed in his mother's tales of the Great Kings of the Past that she would tell him about when he was a cub. the history father • Ikenna, King of the Ikemba pride mother • Hasina, Queen of the Ikemba pride siblings • Mandisa (sister) important people • The lions in the Ikemba Pride, what few he has connections with. His closest bond is with his mother, Hasina. overall history • It all started with the formation of the Ikemba Pride, led by a lion known as Ikenna. The pride was small in comparison to those around it, but it had tenacity, and its members forged strong bonds. Ikenna was not a bad leader by any means – he made sure his members were fed, and he cared for his mate, Hasina. Sometimes his methods were seen as controversial, and occasional meetings with hyenas suspicious, but for the most part, he was a good protector. The members of his pride were loyal to him, and in turn, he was happy to provide for them. It was a joyous day for him when his mate gave birth to fraternal twins. However, there was something unusual about the male cub -- in contrast to the other lions in their pride, he was white as a ghost. This is where his name, “Mzuka,” came from. And it was clear from the start that his oddities would not stop at the color of his fur. Between him and his sister Mandisa, Mzuka was seen as the lesser of two by their father. He had a wonderful imagination and a sharp mind, but he was a sickly cub, and by consequence spent more time by his mother’s side. He adored being in her company, however -- being strong in her faith, she would tell him stories about the Great Kings of the Past, which sparked an interest of storytelling within himself. Though one would expect the siblings to be close, Mzuka hardly knew his sister. He and Mandisa were like night and day -- he was weak, she was strong. He was cowardly, she was outgoing. Whenever they play-fought or were sent to hunt together, it was always Mandisa who would lead. And whenever he was stuck in the den, she was out in the field. Though she too had an unusual physical appearance, her uniquities were revered rather than ridiculed. And though Mandisa had her father’s unyielding approval, Mzuka was far and away closest with their mother. Another perceived shortcoming was his lack of physical prowess. While Mandisa was trained to hunt among the other lionesses, Mzuka was appointed to help guard the pride with the older males. Though his keen senses made him an excellent sentry, he did very poorly when it came to actually having to fight on his own. Despite being a fast runner, he did not possess the strength or dexterity to avoid getting hurt when defending against a threat. He wanted so badly to make friends with the other lions in his pride, but they never seemed to want to give him the time of day. He was social, but others were wary of his coloring, and found him to be too talkative or simply nonsensical whenever he tried to tell a story. He had one or two friends, but no more than that, and he found himself feeling frustrated by the fact that he did not seem to have the same interest in female lions that others did. These faults, combined with Mzuka’s distaste for his father’s opinions, led to the two being at odds with one another. Though he was supposed to be his heir, he was shunned by his peers, ridiculed because of his fur, and generally seen as an unsuitable champion to the Pride. The day the worlds merged was when things were really turned on its axis for all involved. The grasslands were ravaged with thorns, laying waste to what was once their home. Unsure of what to do, but tantalized by the prospect of growing more powerful and potentially being rewarded for their efforts, Ikenna made the decision to pledge himself and the Ikemba Pride to the Thorns. He was no believer of the Great Kings of the Past and had little love for Mufasa and his pride, viewing them as the reason they got into this mess in the first place. With this offer came Mzuka’s departure from the pride. It was a sudden decision, made almost overnight, and fronted with the reasoning that all male lions leave the pride to start their own at his age. Some say it was a voluntary leave, some say Ikenna threw him to the curb -- but with a tearful goodbye to his mother, he ventured out on his own. He wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do; war was such an overwhelming concept that he did not want to be involved, but he sure as hell knew he couldn’t support such a corrupt regime. the role player alias • Inky age • 22 pronouns • she/her other characters • quite a few, actually |
