"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Birds and other animals scurried and flapped from the trees as the young Princess shrieked at the top of her lungs. Her tail flicked back and forth as the air flowed through her lungs from her screeching. Sometimes, she would say, one just needed to yell. And she was frustrated. Frustrated by laundry. Frustrated by chores. Frustrated by the inability to do something that wasn't just scrubbing pots. Playing would have been nice but she wanted to help. But she couldn't. Maybe if she had antlers...

She'd dragged her brother along on her screaming session. Most of the time, she felt, Geno didn't want to come along to her therapeutic thingies but today she needed her brother. She's made a fuss and kicked up dust until he came with her. We're twins, Geno, she'd said, you have to come play with me because that's how twins work. She was a manipulative little thing when she wanted to be.

Shaking her ears in the wind, Gurri turned to face her brother, gleefully awaiting the look on his face. "See? It's fun. Try it."

Geno’s face was doing the most excellent impression of his species in headlights the world had ever seen.

Round warm eyes were the size of twin moons, effectively shooting his brow up and hiding antler buds behind dark maroon fluff. Ears, stare, and even flat black nose were all riveted on Gurri. He was pretty sure if he stood any more still he’d turn into a tree.

He was twins with a crazy animal.

The brainy fawn was pretty sure twins didn’t normally do this together. Rabbits had three, sometimes four or five young born all at the same time and he’d never once heard them all getting together and screeching as a sworn duty. Birds came in twos sometimes. Geno was sure he’d notice if they went off to empty their voiceboxes st the same time. No. He was the one who studied patterns and twins totally didn’t do this sort of thing that was absolutely not ‘playing.’ Gurri was the one who made up stuff and then talked as loudly as she could like that would make what she was saying true.

And Mother called Geno the daydreamer.

The strawberry-tinted buck tipped his head on one side. ”Um. It does not look fun.” Stated Bambi’s son. He tilted his newborn rack the other way and frowned uncertainly. ”Plus you scared all those poor birds. I bet they don’t like having their dreams interrupted, either.”

That last bit was pretty pointed. Geno’s stare became dryly lidded and his ears flipped back a little. He liked to be asleep because he got to dream. Gurri liked to be awake because, apparently, it meant she could wake other people up too.

Gurri stuck her tongue out at her stick in the mud brother. He genuinely didn't know how to have fun. He'd always been a sourpuss but this war had turned him into an even worse one. It seemed like he never wanted to play anymore or follow her around or even just watch as she did insane crazy things. Was it because the war had finally started to brew a bit more? Was it because Grandfather was grooming him to take over after Bambi? Or was it because of the reason that often plagued her when he was being particularly whiny or objectionable...did he just not like her anymore? She knew she could be annoying and brash and hotheaded but could it be that Geno really was starting to dislike her?

"It's therapeutic," she insisted, eyes narrowed, a pout forming on her bottom lip, "I scream, therefore I don't keep it inside. It's psychology. Look it up."

She flicked her tail upwards, that feeling still chilled in the pit of her stomach. He's going to be the Great Prince and you'll just be another doe to him. He's not going to be little your brother much longer. He's going to be annoyed with you just like everybody else it. A whimper of fear left her muzzle before she shook her body and turned back to her brother. Even if he is going to forget about me, she said, I can still beat him in a game.

"Fine," she huffed, lowering her head to face him, "I'm a rival stag, come to take your land! What're you gonna do about it, oh wise and great prince?" She snorted a giggle and waited for Geno to react to the beginning of her little game.

“Your version of fun did bite me in the tailbone! Just this week in fact!” Geno’s usually sedate voice rose a bit, but Gurri didn’t seem to be in the listening mood for an argument. She stuck out her tongue at him and Geno glared back, wrinkling his nose.

But then something changed in her eyes, and Bambi’s son’s brows relaxed back up into surprise. The tenderhearted buck could never withstand a pout for very long—and besides, he was kind of impressed that Gurri knew the word ‘therapeutic.’ And ‘psychology.’ Blinking with newfound interest that, as usual, made every other emotion the Little Prince could carry drop out of his big brain, Geno stepped up beside Gurri to peer out at the forest she’d disrupted. His eyes flicked over the branches as if he could study where the stuff Gurri had been ‘keeping inside’ flew away to.

Really? He was about to say, along with a few other questions she probably would’ve called brainy. Like Where does it go? and Why screaming? Maybe breathing hard would work too? And not wake up so many animals? But then his fluff-lined ear caught a weird noise and forced him to turn and look back at Gurri.

Was that a whimper? His sister never whimpered. Whined, sometimes. Shouted, obviously. But that was a totally different sound. Geno’s small mouth fell open in bewilderment.

Gurri was always faster than her contemplative brother could keep up with. So he didn’t have much time to sort out why she was whimpering and what she needed to keep from ‘holding in’ before, like the seasons in fast-forward mode, her mood changed again. Now she was giggling and wanting to play-fight.

Geno’s jaw clipped shut again and he regarded her for a moment. With an imperious sniff, the maroon buck’s first reaction was to tilt his chin up and remind her that he didn’t like this game either. And a Prince did not lower his horns to a doe, anyway. She knew he didn’t like roughhousing. It was too much like violence for the gentle soul.

But then he thought about that funny little sound she’d made and how it kind of reminded him of the baby birds he’d seen fall out of nests, and how much he didn’t like hearing it from his carefree sister. Maybe this would make her feel better.

Awkwardly, Geno ducked his head and smiled nervously. “O-Oh...oh yeah?” He pointed his buds at his sister, but kind of ruined the effect with the way he kept glancing up again to make sure he was aiming right and this was working. “I’m gonna do...this!”

He bounced forward, hoping to just get his slicked-back hair up against her crazy moptop. Geno just barely managed to keep his head down. He was afraid to actually touch Gurri—she didn’t have antlers. What if he poked her too hard?

"I choose to forget that happened," She giggled, thinking about the turtle incident from just earlier in the week. She'd thought it was pretty funny. But apparently Geno and by an extension Grandpa did not. she was still thinking about how her grandfather had scolded her gently after she played the prank. Somehow she was sure that eventually she'd stop being scolded and start being chased away.

Her hope that Geno had missed her flicker of venerability was doused when she saw his jaw slightly drop. She didn't want to let her brother know she had weaknesses. She was always the brave, brash one. He was always the smart one, the sensitive one. That's why they made the perfect pair. Chaos and Order. She cleared her throat, looking awkwardly off to the side before turning back to the her brother. Emotions sucked. How could she explain to Geno that she was afraid she would get left behind just as another doe in the field?

When he lowered his head to play she was even more surprised. He never usually played that easy. Maybe he really did want to keep playing with her. He bounced towards her, pressing his hair against hers. She grinned, tail flicking upwards as she took a step back dramatically. "Oh no! the heroic stag has vanquished the foe! The forest is his once again!"

She stumbled playfully to the side and rolled to the side, falling on her side. "I'm dead now."

Geno’s snout pointed up to watch Gurri’s dramatic flop. He leaned his head on one side, frowning quizzically. Well. That was easier than normal. Was something really the matter with her? Or was this more of her usual dramatic craziness? No. She just liked flopping around.

”I don’t think it’s possible to die from one push.” Observed the childish voice very seriously. ”Otherwise stags wouldn’t spar so much.” But maybe that was because male deer had antlers. Maybe the racks protected their brains, and maybe that was why does didn’t spar—because they could be really badly hurt with one strike, or—

Wait a minute. This was Gurri logic. Which never made any sense.

The buck shook his maroon head to clear it and took a few steps to stand directly over his fallen sister. Geno ducked. ”And dead deer don’t breathe like—” a playful grin returned to his usually vacant expression, and one thin knee dropped down to prod Gurri’s stomach, ”like giggly rabbits! Huhhahah!”

He got a lovely idea. A really Gurri idea, but it might cheer her up more. Plus it was fun to be the one standing over her, for once. Geno immediately reared so he could tickle his twin with the other foreleg’s knee, letting his rarely-heard bubbly laugh wake the rest of the Forest.

"No-no, I'm dead now. Your mighty antlers have speared me and I'm dead. Goodnight."

This was what she wanted. Geno, pointing out how her silly games didn't logically make any sense. How a deer couldn't die from one head butt. But Gurri liked being dramatic, she liked a wild game of life and death. Besides, didn't Geno need to learn to protect the herd from wild, rogue males? Gurri knew she was right. Playing was learning and good for a deer's development. She closed her eyes and let her tongue loll out of her mouth. When Geno stood over top of her, she let one eye roll open.

"...like giggly rabbits! Huhhahah!”

Her eyes shot open and she let out a snorty laugh as Geno tickled her chest and belly. "No-no!" She laughed, snorting between each 'haha.' Geno was being silly? How bizarre! It was usually her tickling him. Leave it to Geno to bring up a game they played all the time when the war wasn't weighing down upon them. She rolled over on her side but the tickles continued.

"Too much! Too much! You win! You win!"

Geno’s smile only grew. The tickling slowed, a little, as his train of thought got snagged on Gurri’s laugh and distracted him from play. Funny how there were different kinds of laughs, just like a bird’s chirp meant different things.

Sometimes Gurri’s laugh was loud and crazy and meant one of her loud and crazy ideas were about to explode on the unsuspecting forest. Sometimes it was fragile and wiggly, an earthworm trying to get back underground before a storm when she was giggling guiltily. That was after said crazy plans got her in trouble. But the best Gurri laugh was this one, where she wasn’t being chaos or causing chaos. The kind of laugh he could actually cause, even if tickling was cheating.

Yeah, this was his favorite Gurri laugh.

Geno bounced up from his front knees, back on all four hooves. He lifted his chin in the air. ”Yes I do. A Prince always wins.”

That might not be true. But if it continued the Gurri Laugh her twin brother didn’t mind.

"Oh suuuure," she said, barking out another laugh, "Yes, the great prince always wins!"

Gurri rolled over fully on her back and sighed, looking up at her brother. Her brother who was becoming the spitting image of Bambi. He had lost his spots and had antler buds. But she was happy they were still buds. She was happy she could still see little white hairs which hadn't faded from his flank. It was reminders of when they were little. When they saw the lion triplets for the first time. Lion cubs couldn't walk at first so she and Geno had been fascinated by them. When she knocked her teeth out and Geno was there by her side to help distract her from the pain.

She let out a sigh and looked to the sky. She pointed to a cloud. "That cloud looks like a lion," she announced. She hoped Geno would roll on his back next to her so they could look at the morning clouds as they emerged.

Geno stopped with his tail in the air and his mouth falling open. He took immediate interest in his sister's new game, his eyes sliding up and finding one of the clouds.

Sure enough, there it drifted. The Bambi-like cheeks lifted in a delighted smile. It looked like Uncle Simba, romping through the sky. Wistfulness gleamed in his tree-colored eyes. They reflected the mounds of white traveling over the clear blue sky, like fawns chasing each other through an endless meadow. Contemplative little head began to drift into daydream land. What would it be like, to fly like the birds did? Was it possible to frolic up there, or were his hooves always going to be rooted to the ground? Geno had flown many times in dreams. He'd play pretend that he was up there with Friend Owl, learning everything there was to know about sunrises and feathers and how the air worked, seeing everything there was to see from fathoms and fathoms up...

Now the small expression dropped into a circle and he whipped his head toward Gurri. This was more relaxed than her usual games. The teardrop skull tilted, thoughtful as ever. Actually, it was Geno who normally got lost looking at the sky. She really was in a weird mood this morning, wasn't she? Or was she just trying to be nice to him?

Or was she finally settling down like Auntie Nala always claimed she would?

Geno's contemplative look stayed fixed on his sister as he carefully stepped back toward her. He hesitated just a second more, watching her face and wishing he could analyze it like Father felt the forest. Well. Whatever the reason, it was a nice surprise! The darker twin knelt in the dignified way he'd inherited from the Great Prince and eased himself into his back, resting a newly antlered head on her tummy. ”It does.”

Thoughts of what his sister might be feeling flickered out of Geno's head, excited fireflies. He extended a hoof to gesture, remembering something. ”You know, Miss DunBark says that clouds are made up of lots of little pieces of water. She says they're not fluffy, like feathers, at all. They're more like...mist. And when it rains, it's the clouds dropping down here to us.”

The voice of a student reciting facts dimmed into Geno's storyteller voice. ”But you know what I think? I think it would be even better if clouds were like the Great Kings, trying to tell us a story with pictures. You know, like King Mufasa says. They're up there with the stars. So maybe when a cloud looks just like a lion...well, don't you think it could be them?”

"Miss who-what now?"

Gurri was staring at the lion shaped cloud, thinking about Kopa, when her brother started in on his facts. Gurri rolled her ice blue eyes but she let him ramble. She'd had her fun, it was only fair that she let Geno talk about mists and little pieces of water. Her nose scrunched. Clouds not fluffy? How could that be possible? They looked cottony and soft like Uncle Thumper's tail!

"Nuh-uh!" She said, unable to help herself, "They're totally soft! Like a bunny! How does she know? has she touched them?"

Honestly, Gurri thought sheepishly, she'd know if she bothered to show up to class.

Gurri listened intently as Geno spoke. She returned her nose to the sky and thought about it. She tilted her head and stared up at the lion shaped cloud which seemed to get more blob shaped by the moment. King Mufasa had told them about the stars and the great kings. Deer didn't have beliefs like that, Gurri thought to herself. After awkwardly lifting her hoof and gently poking her brother in the nose, she opened her mouth to reply.

"It could be," she said, "But...what about deer? Or foxes? Or dogs, like Angel? Or bunnies like Uncle Thumper? Are they y'know...telling stories too? What do you think?" This was Geno's territory. He was the smart one.

Geno shook his head, world weary, brushing his maroon fluff against his sister's tummy fur. How could anyone forget Miss DunBark? She knew everything! Almost as much as Grandfather. She'd been all over! And she spent all day teaching kids important things. He wanted to explain, but decided better of it. Only Gurri could totally miss how cool the collie was. He didn't feel like arguing with her about the teacher or clouds anyway. They'd only just started being friends again after his talk with Grandfather...since the turtle incident.

Geno blinked, cross-eyed, at the hoof that bopped his snout. It couldn't distract the brainy buck from the new ideas Gurri came up with.

These were questions he hadn't even thought to ask yet. And they were interesting! Grandfather was right. It was working! If he just listened to Gurri, her 'unorthodox'-ness came up with things Geno hadn't thought of.

And he loved to think of new things.

Plus she was asking him. Gurri didn't always act like she knew everything, but usually she got bored listening to Geno talk. Which he didn't understand. But it was a fact of life, ever since they'd learned to talk. Still, that didn't mean Geno didn't want this conversation to last as long as possible. He bent his brain on the questions.

”I...I think so.” Well, he hoped so. Once, Bambi had said something about 'when your Grandfather's season ends,' talking about becoming leader of the Forest. It felt like a faraway dream. Or a nightmare. The Great Prince was wiser and stronger and better than the oldest trees in their lands. It seemed distant and untrue that his season could ever end. But if it did happen...Geno knew he'd want to still be able to ask the skies for advice, like Great Uncle Mufasa was known to. Besides, why should it only be a lion thing?

”Everything in the forest has it's season. Where one thing falls, another grows in it's place.” Solemnly recited Faline's son. Mother said it whenever the subject of death came up. Now Geno carried on the thought. ”But...what if, when it falls, the old things go up there?”

His train of thought picked up speed, so Geno lifted his head and craned his neck towards Gurri excitedly. ”Like the clouds! Like Miss DunBark says. She says water e-vap-or-ates, and goes up into the sky after it falls.” That was hard to understand, but he'd added it to the store of knowledge between his tulip ears anyway. Now it was coming in handy. "So maybe bunnies and foxes and dogs and everything falls, then goes up where the Great Kings are? And they allll tell stories, and help the new things to grow...hey! Just like rain!”

The small animal's voice turned dreamy. Geno could lay back and look up at the clouds for hours like this, dancing along that new idea. Sometimes he did. Usually it ended with Gurri running into him, or jumping on top of him, or poking him repeatedly with the black parts of her body--nose, hooves, anything to pester him into doing something with her.
