She is entirely obsessed with staying young, not only because she fears death, but because she’s very vain. To her, beauty is everything. the history overall history • Gothel grew up honing her skills as an actress. She’d always been manipulative, driving her own mother to her wits’ end with lies and saucy tricks, with her father, a stonemason, wrapped around her little finger. Despite the parents of Gothel wishing for her to have an advantageous marriage and settle down, Gothel preferred to flirt her way from boy to boy and commit herself to the theater. She was an accomplished actress, with all the fame and adoration and compliments her selfish heart could enjoy...until the day she turned forty. Then her guild fired her in favor of a few up-and-coming actresses. They offered to let her stay on and train the new blood, but she took this as an insult. Gothel was summoned home by her father, who needed help caring for her sickly old mother. Gothel was already angry, listless, despondent over age ruining her career; she was unkind when she noticed the sad degradation of her elderly mother. After her death, Gothel tried to avoid any of the work needed to tidy up her mother’s belongings...but she did stumble upon a book. It mentioned a Demanitus Scroll, and a way to find eternal youth. Gothel became obsessive. She used every ounce of her actress’ wiles and fading good looks to poke her nose into all corners of Corona. She was determined to find the legendary Sundrop and unlock it’s secrets, restore her youth. Instead of staying in her father’s cottage, she convinced the old widower to build her her own tower deep in the woods. Her research had driven her to scour a certain part of the forests for the sundrop and she needed a halfway-point in her travels to stay—this became that hidden tower. Gothel finally found the sundrop and used her copies of the Incantation on the Demanitus Scroll to restore her youth. Her father, terrified by this evidence of witchcraft, believed he was going mad when his daughter would not explain. When the old man died, Gothel became the owner of his cottage and enjoyed compliments in the marketplace and kingdom for her stunning looks. She might have gone back into her actress career if it hadn’t been for an unfortunate accident. Gothel took the first steps to falling in love with one admirer in particular...but that faded when he left her with a daughter, Cassandra. This little brat became the only person in the world Gothel didn’t crave admiration or attention from, despite the poor thing longing to love and be loved. She continued her routine of using the flower’s power to restore her youth and beauty, and using that beauty to wile her way into food or comforts or gifts that would distract her pest of a daughter. After all, why work when you could flirt? One day, the Queen became ill and the King sought a miracle in the form of the sundrop flower. Gothel was horrified to find it uprooted and stopped at nothing to get it’s power back. She stole Rapunzel, the princess who came as a result of the Queen’s life being saved, for the sake of the infant’s magical healing hair. While being chased, she led the King’s men to her father’s cottage, where Cassandra waited...and abandoned her there in favor of the Tower. From this tower, Gothel raised Rapunzel to believe she was her true mother and used the child’s hair to keep herself young. She manipulated the lost princess into believing that the outside world was a dark, scary place, and forbid her from ever leaving. She spent years obsessively fortifying the building her father had gifted her against anyone finding it. The kingdom didn’t stop looking for their heir even after years...so Gothel turned her obsession to something new. In order to keep Rapunzel’s hair to herself, she’d have to eventually somehow get rid of the Kingdom’s incessant searches. She began venturing out more and more, leaving Rapunzel at home not only to enjoy her compliments of beauty at the marketplace, but to research the other options the Scroll gave. There was a moonstone, said to be capable of destructive power. No King or man would ever take her Flower and youth from her if she could wield such power, as well. Before Gothel could get anywhere with this goal, Rapunzel ran away from the tower with Flynn Rider, known thief. Through manipulation of the stabbington brothers, Gothel followed and returned her wayward “daughter” to the Tower. She never panicked or lost her head, managing to condemn Flynn to the gallows for his thievery and break Rapunzel’s will in one fell swoop...or so she thought. Rapunzel revealed that she now knew her true identity as the lost princess and would have run away again. But Gothel, resorting to the cruelest of manipulation, lured and fatally stabbed Flynn to the Tower as he came to his loved one’s rescue. Rapunzel promised to go with the villainess without a fight if she could heal the man. Knowing Rapunzel never broke her promises, Gothel agreed...and was reduced to dust when Flynn severed Rapunzel’s hair, cutting off the Flower’s power and killing the ancient actress. Gothel was revived by Hades at the behest of the Evil Queen. Her Majesty, co-leading the Cursed Thorns, wanted to know the secrets of the Sundrop and Moonstone and would have tortured the newly-living Mother Gothel to get these answers. But Gothel used her manipulation skills to save herself. Not only would she tell the Queen everything in exchange for her life, but, if the Evil Queen would keep Gothel young, she would use her skill to make new actresses and spies out of the Thorns’ youngest recruits. It didn’t take much convincing for the monarch to allow another capable villainess into their ranks...especially one who understood the importance of beauty. the role player alias • Maxine age • pronouns • She, her how did you find us? • Spot other characters •Colleen, Lady Tremaine, Ariel, Hook, Jaribu, Nick Wild, Pleakley, Mrs. Potts, Vitani, Shan Yu, Spooky 300, Slushy 523, Jim Hawkins, Donkey, Zuri, Mother Gothel, Genie |
