Many assume he’s a selfish, greedy, untrustworthy rogue who only cares about himself and his next score, and not without good reason. Sinbad does possess these qualities in spades and often does little to discourage this perception. Though he’s not without morals, he looks out primarily for himself and his crew and gets a genuine joy out of stealing from others, both for the thrill and because he likes a good pay day. However, those who say that that is all there is to him would be incorrect. At his heart, Sinbad is simply a man with the soul of an adventurer and a deep love for the sea, and the only lifestyle for a kid with his means that satisfied that was a life of piracy. As a captain, he is incredibly clever and a strong, capable leader to those who choose to follow him. He is a man who oozes confidence in the way he walks, talks, and carries himself in general. He flirts with confidence, he fights with confidence (and flair!), he leads with confidence, and if he ever feels an inkling of doubt in the things he says or does, nobody except perhaps those closest to his heart would ever know of it. His cockiness runs so deep that he often treats serious matters such as battle as a joke. He’s so sure of his own skill and ability to do what he needs to do, so why not have some fun with it? While his cockiness isn’t entirely unjustified, even he has his moments where he slips up, and when that happen you’d be hard pressed to get him to admit it. Apologies and admitting to mistakes aren’t things he’s good at. Despite his prowess as a thief and reputation as a liar, Sinbad is also a surprisingly honest person. If he intends to screw you over, he’ll certainly let you know. He has never and will never felt the need to lie to himself about the type of person he is, much less anyone else. In fact the biggest lie he’s ever told is that he is a wholly selfish person who spurns sentimental attachments to people, in reality that couldn’t be further from the truth. Sinbad pretends, perhaps enough that even he himself believes it, that other people mean little to him when in fact he holds on to the few ties he’s made in his life tightly. Little by little, however, he’s learning to be more open about his attachments and shed his selfish persona. He’s still selfish in his own way, however he’s learned to extend the small circle of people he’s willing to look out for and risk his neck for by a small margin. Anyone outside the circle still really isn't his concern. the history overall history • Born and raised in Syracuse, Sicily, Sinbad didn’t have much growing up. He was an orphan who stole to survive, and he was damn good at it, until one day he stole from the wrong people. A gang of thugs who didn’t take kindly to being made a fool of by a thirteen year old chased him down and had him cornered, ready to take back what he’d stolen and, potentially, end his life, until another kid came to his rescue. Together, they’d fought off the thugs and became thick as thieves afterwards. Discovering his new friend was the prince did little to discourage their bond, and they grew into adulthood together. Sinbad never begrudged Proteus’ status and never felt an ounce of envy for his best friend. He was perfectly fine with his place in the world and the vast difference in their stations. Or at least he was, until he first laid eyes on the ambassador of Thrace, a beautiful woman who was in talks to be Proteus’ intended. Sinbad felt a connection with her at first sight but the jealousy he felt for his best friend in that moment was enough to make him leave Syracuse and never look back. He signed up to the crew of a pirate ship and began climbing the ranks, making a name for himself and eventually acquired a ship of his own. The Chimera was small, but impossibly fast, and Sinbad loved every inch of her. He amassed a ragtag crew of his own and their skills combined with his ship made them the most effective group of thieves to sail the seven seas. Sinbad spent years on the sea taking what he wanted and living for nobody but himself and his men. They respected him and he, in turn led them through more successes than failures. Finally, ten years after he left Syracuse his past caught up with him. He reconnected with Proteus before becoming entangled in the scheme of the goddess of chaos, Eris. Though he didn’t do as she wished, his conscience stirred by the reappearance of Proteus’ fiance, she framed him for stealing the book of peace anyways. Proteus, in a show of good faith, took his place on the executioner's block, and the council gave him a week to retrieve the book or his friend would die in his place. While initially unmoved by the deadline, planning instead to head to Fiji, Sinbad took a bribe from Proteus’ fiance Marina to go to Tartarus like he’d agreed to do instead. Eventually, after a lot of tension, monster-fighting, and daring rescues, they made it. At that point, Sinbad had fallen deeply in love with Marina, and he hated himself for it. The guilt over their feelings for one another caused him to genuinely believe Eris’ claims that he was a black-hearted, selfish liar, and that caused him to lose the book. He went back anyway, set to face his execution like a man rather than allow his innocent friend to die for him, not realizing that that was enough to get the book back until a seething Eris appeared and handed it to him. Proteus saved, Sinbad was ready to leave Syracuse and set sail once more, unwilling to break Proteus’ heart by asking Marina to come with him. Much to his delight, however, the two worked it out and she surprised him by sneaking on his ship… again. They sailed around having adventures together with his crew, but eventually the merging of the worlds became apparent to them and with it, talks of the war. Sinbad wasn’t concerned with the war, but he was interested in new worlds. New lands to explore, new people to meet...and steal from. However, he knew that wartime made for good money for thieves and smugglers such as himself, and Sinbad was still a pirate at heart. With no intention to dedicate to any cause, Sinbad and his crew set sail to the heart of the war, ready to take advantage of any opportunity that came their way. the role player alias • Shay age • 25 pronouns •she/her/hers other characters • Violet Parr |
