At some point in the past, he earned the foremost spot among the rest of his people, chosen to speak for them whenever called upon. It was he who led them on their ultimately futile search for Aurora, ignorantly looking for a baby for sixteen years. He survived the resulting outburst of rage from Maleficent, later joining his people in capturing Prince Philip, and trying to kill him after he broke loose from his chains. When it seemed that Maleficent herself fell in battle, Hurken hid himself and his people and waited. For what, he couldn't say, but something still called to him. Soon enough, this patience paid off, and when Maleficent reappeared, he returned to her service. When he found she was placing him and his people under the command of another, he didn't argue. To him, her word was law.
