overall history • Ed had always been a...special case, either unable or unwilling to speak, communicating only through various different laughs, though he understood plenty. Such as how to scavenge through discarded bones, and eventually, alongside fellow cubs Shenzi and Banzai, how to poach in the Pridelands, a task he took to readily enough with the help of the two other hyenas, whom he took to following around.

As time went on, and the three matured, they grew to be able to understand the meaning behind his laughter, and valued him as a friend. During this time, the trio met the lion who would someday be known as Scar, and worked out an agreement with him. The details didn't matter much to Ed. As was his usual custom, he followed Shenzi's lead. When this came to mean killing Simba, the thought of murdering a mere cub didn't faze him in the slightest.

Unfortunately, they bungled the job, forcing Scar to form a more ambitious plan aimed at seeing both Simba and Mufasa dead. But, right when things seemed to be going so well, it all came crashing down when a human dropped in out of nowhere and saved Mufasa's life. In the ensuing chaos, Ed followed Shenzi and Banzai as they fled back to the Elephant Graveyard, leaving Scar to be exiled.

Far from the life of luxury they were promised, Ed nonetheless settled back into life in the Graveyard, and if Ed was ever discontented with Shenzi's leadership, he never showed any signs of it. Nor did he have much to do with any of her cubs, by and large. There was some idle speculation that he might be the father of a cub named Cheezi, a friend, or perhaps lackey, of Shenzi's son Janja, but nobody asked him, and Cheezi's mother declined to comment. Still, friend she was, and matriarch, so where she led, he would follow. This meant that when Scar returned and called upon the hyenas to join him in a new war, convincing Shenzi to cast her lot in with the dark lion once more, Ed followed without hesitation.

Even after officially joining the Cursed Thorns, Ed was mostly left to Shenzi to manage, since she was one of a select few who could actually communicate with him.
