January 11-Open to Sarabi
Shadows began to lengthen as the sun made its way towards the western horizon, and the forest began to prepare for the coming night. While it wasn't an uncommon sight to see some lions just lying about in the shade during the day, dozing off after hunting, or patrolling, there were a small series of fitting dens for them set aside in a part of the forest, enlarged as needed where possible. One of these had been set aside for the royal family.
It wasn't near so grand as Pride Rock, nor was there so spacious a chamber as had been within that towering monolith, but it had served as home for the pride for some years now. And, more importantly for the moment, it provided a place of peace and quiet, away from the rest of that part of the army that now called the forest home as well. While Mufasa had followed Sarabi's gentle but firm suggestion to spend the day resting, now that he was out of sight of everyone, except for his beloved queen, he didn't have to wear his royal facade of calm, unending strength and endurance.
He was no longer a young lion by any means, though age had yet to slow him, sap his strength and stamina, or dull his senses. He was still the powerful lion he'd been since before Simba was born. But even the strongest kings needed time to themselves to rest. Time to let the facade drop, and set the crown aside. There was a very small list of people he trusted enough to fully let his royal composure drop around, when nobody else was present. Sarabi was at the top of the list, and had been for the longest time the only one.
Thus, when he was inside the den they shared, he allowed just how weary his trip had left him. Like as not she'd spotted the little tells earlier in the day, a small look here, a step there, that betrayed how demanding a trip his royal tour had been, but now he stopped hiding it. For the longest time, there had been no secrets between them, no deceptions, no matter how small. He sighed as he rather heavily lowered himself to the ground, briefly displaying all of his teeth in a massive yawn.
"And to think I once thought walking the borders of the Pride Lands took a long time," he chuckled, the deep rumble echoing slightly in the enclosed space. It had been important though, despite the time and effort involved, and the long absence from Sarabi. Truth be told, that was the hardest part to bear. But for now though, they had this moment all to themselves.
