"He-he-hello? Anybody? Excuse me?"

Oliver's ears twitched as the small tom weaved between legs in the dark city streets. Terror gripped him. He was used to the rhythm of New York City where everything was fast paced and upbeat. At night he could watch the city still be a buzz of activity; the city that never sleeps was a true statement and he could even tell that from Jenny's bedroom window. But this place was soft, everyone's steps were large and slow. He'd almost been caught underfoot a bunch of times. Everyone was about their own way and he was used to that being from Manhattan. But, he couldn't put a claw on it, but he didn't care for this. He missed the city. But if he was going to help the cause and keep Jenny safe then he needed to be there.

"R-r-rita?" His voice was a low squeak. Lights and sound rang in his ear as the familiar musty scent of alcohol his his sensitive kitty nose.

Turning, he moved his way towards the bar, squeezing in between the door and the last patrons who were leaving. The bar was dark all of a sudden and he swallowed nervously. All he could scent was booze, sweat, human. His ears dropped as he paced alongside the wall.

"She's probably not here," he said. He sat back on his haunches and let out an exhausted sigh. "Jenny's all alone and I ran off for nothing."

"Kid?"

Luckily for Oliver, Rita wasn't that far off. She'd been a bit preoccupied, sure, but even so she had heard a familiar voice above everything else. At first, Rita had been a little uncertain whether or not she'd heard correctly. When she'd pulled herself from the task of cleaning up a part of the pub and poked her head up from behind the bar, though, she spotted him. It would have been difficult not to see Oliver. His tabby fur helped him to stand out even at a distance. A warm smile tugged on the saluki's lips, then she padded out from behind the bar and approached. Her tail wagged back and forth all the while.

"Hey, Oliver," Rita greeted. She finally reached him, then put a paw affectionately atop his head to greet him. That was normally Dodger's thing, she knew, but it felt right. She'd missed seeing him around. The fledglings among the rest of the Wings were great and all, but there was just something nice about a familiar face to Rita. They had a fair amount of catching up to do.

"It's been a while." She smiled, then as it started to fade she looked him over. Not a whisker nor a hair seemed to be out of place. That seemed good enough to her, thankfully. She was glad to know he'd gotten there safely. That just begged the question of what had brought him all the way out there, though. Had he come looking for her? Did Dodger or the rest of the gang worry about her and think that Oliver would be the best to locate her? Or... was the kid just worried about her himself and wanted to be with her? Concern did dance in her eyes for a beat before she motioned for him to come a bit further to the side. That way he wouldn't be in anyone's way in case someone else walked in to the pub.

Come to think of it, she thought, he'd probably like to relax a little. Then she could start asking him more about how he'd gotten there. Yeah... that sounded like a good plan, she decided.

"You doing okay?" Rita inquired, voice soft and sweet. "Bet if you walked a lot of the way here you're pretty hungry. Right?"

"Rita?"

His ears perked and he turned over his shoulder, eyes wide as he heard the silky smooth voice of the street dog who'd taken him under her wing. When he was cold, lost and hungry Rita had been one of the first dogs to teach him about New York City. That the cold streets that had taken him and chewed him up and spit him out could actually be golden and welcoming. He remembered her lessons even when he was with Jenny. And now he'd finally found her. She really had run off to war like she said. As she placed her paw on him he reached up and grabbed her paw, hugging it close to his face. He released her and smiled up at her.

"I'm so glad I found you," he said, purring loudly behind his words, "i'm okay but...It took forever to get here! And then I thought you weren't here and...and but you were here so it's all okay now!"

She thought about what she said. "I dunno," he said, "Doesn't look like a place we can get a real New York street dawg, huh?" He let his tail wag a little bit as he looked up to make sure she had gotten the joke.

His innocence just warmed Rita right to her very core. Same old Oliver, she thought. When he finished speaking, she chuckled a little and nodded a bit. She got the joke, all right. Dawg, hot dogs... it would have been hard to miss it. That was what made Oliver so precious to Rita, though. For a cat, he had a pretty canine way of thinking. Probably because he'd hung around with the gang as long as he had, she told herself. That all said, Oliver did have a point. The food at the Snuggly Duckling wasn't terrible, but it wasn't quite as good as what one could get in good old New York City.

"Maybe nothing as good as those sausages Dodger could get us," Rita admitted, "but we'll get you fixed up with something good. Let's see..." What could they scrounge up amongst the leftovers? The tavern was due for getting a bussing, but no one had come by to do that just yet. The fledglings must have been busy with other duties. That was fine, though. It gave her and Oliver more of a chance to sniff around.

After motioning with her tail for Oliver to follow her lead, Rita started to saunter around the tables and sniffed at the air. So far, nothing particularly good stood out to her. Baked goods here and there, which were fine, but she figured that Oliver would want something a little more filling. Something a little... ah ha!

"Bingo." She saw a table off to the side, and she smelled leftover turkey leg. She'd had some quite a few nights ago. If Oliver wanted filling, that would be that. She bunched up her muscles, crouched down, and leaped for the chair of the table nearest to her. Once there, she snatched the turkey leg up by the bone and held it for Oliver to see. Then she winked again.

"How's this, kid?"

Oliver watched in wonder as Rita used her doggy nose to sniff around for some food. He sat down and tried to use his own feline senses to sniff about trying to find food. Cat noses were good but he didn't really use his all that much, after all food was brought to him. Why use his nose to find food? He parted his jaws, however, as inhaled the scent of the kitchen in but all he got was a weird sour smell that sometimes was on Winston's breath and crumbs. His ears perked as he saw her pull a turkey leg from somewhere. He smiled and approached, his tail swishing behind him.

"Yeah! Looks great!" True, most of his food came in silver tins and was just as expensive as Georgette's so the turkey leg was beneath his usual meals but he was so hungry from his trip he'd eat a horse if she put it in front of him. Had he become so shallow? No, he thought, he was still the kitten that remembered his days on the streets. His days of dodging taxis and digging through garbage cans, trying to find a home. And his days hanging with Dodger, Rita and the rest of the gang.

He sat down awaiting the cat food. "It's quiet out here, huh?" He said, scratching at his collar, "Not a honk. Not a siren. Not a garbage truck!" It was like the time that Jenny took him along to the Hamptons. He could barely sleep because of the lack of noise and had been glad to get back on the Island. He wasn't sure he could get used to that.

Chuckling softly, Rita set the turkey leg down before Oliver and waited for him to eat. She also was taking in what he had been saying. Admittedly, the quiet of Corona had taken some adjusting to. Rita missed the hustle and bustle of the streets to some degree. She'd grown up there. Truth be told, though, she also was used to sleeping among the presence of other dogs. There had been a good number of them among the Wings, and that had allowed her to adjust a little more easily.

"Don't worry," she told him. "It'll take some time, but you'll get used to the quiet. Even I'm still adjusting a little." Maybe it was just because Rita was a little more... aloof? No, maybe not. Rita just felt like she was easy to transplant from one place to another. That did make her think, though. Then a small laugh slipped free from her maw.

"I remember when I was your age," she admitted. "It used to take me ages to fall asleep 'cause of the noise. Every truck, every siren used to jolt me awake. I'm amazed I slept at all as a pup." She wondered if Oliver could even imagine what she was like at that age. If she hadn't met Dodger, though? She didn't know where she would have been. Probably somewhere else in New York honing a living for herself. Still, the thought did make her appreciate what she had gotten in life. It made her appreciate Oliver a bit more, too, if that was even possible.

"It did get a bit better when I joined the gang," she admitted at length. "Bit further out from the noise, you know..." She was going on a bit. Her fluffy head was given a shake before she laid herself down again. Oliver probably didn't want to hear all of that.

"Oliver," she began at length, "is everything okay? With you, I mean. I didn't think you'd ever wanna leave Jenny." Did something happen? Was his girl okay?
