He doesn’t easily lose his cool, only when he doesn’t have control of a situation, in which case he normally just gets snappish and short-tempered. A lot of this is just for show—he lives by the philosophy that no one but Judy gets to see how he really is on the inside, which is mildly insecure, desperate to be helpful, and compassionate. Otherwise he’s genuinely very sharp, with an excellent memory and head for tricks and strategies. He used to be quite jaded, resigned to slouching through life doing what was expected of his sneaky species, but since meeting and helping Judy he believes in himself again and dares to try being heroic. the history overall history • When Nick was a cub living in the poor provinces of Zootopia he was the textbook definition of bright-eyed and bushy tailed. He had to watch as his father struggled to find any animals that would trust a fox with his big business idea, “Wilde Times.” It was a great idea; a special predators-only amusement center. But nobody would trust Nick’s dad enough to give him a loan. It wore the man of the family down, and little Nick looked for ways to help him daily. He’d fix the old man breakfast (usually burning everything,) make sure the house was clean, and tell everyone who would listen how great dad was. A toddling Fox couldn’t help. Eventually Mr. Wilde’s health failed and he passed away, forcing Nick’s mother to work two jobs. Nick was even more determined to prove himself helpful, and not only helpful, but trustworthy. In his nine year-old brain the only way to do this was to become accepted into the local Junior Ranger Scouts. His mother, kindhearted, supported this by scrounging up money enough to buy her son the uniform. At his very first division meeting, during his initiation, the other animals, who were all prey, cruelly pranked him, beating him up and locking a muzzle around his snout. They refused the little fox entry into their pack because he was a fox. Nick decided then and there to live by the philosophy that he’d never let anyone see that they got to him—and they wouldn’t look twice if he just became what they thought he was and never tried being anything else. So, for the next twenty years of life, Nick honed his natural talents as a con man with his buddy Finnick the Fennec Fox, coming up with a new way to hustle the more gullible denizens of Zootopia every few months and artfully ducking suspicion. He was great at it, making several hundred dollars a day, and learning everyone and nearly everything about the animal city in the process. He was singled out by Detective Judy Hopps, the first rabbit officer in Zootopia. She noticed his illegal operations but couldn’t do anything about them. Nick thought he’d triumphed over her pathetic, ambitious attempts...until she caught him admitting to felony tax evasion and used that to blackmail the wily, Street-smart animal into helping her solve a case which her entire career was staked on. Slowly warming up to and even getting invested in the idea of helping other animals again without realizing it in the process, Nick and Judy found twelve missing mammals being held hostage by corrupt Mayor Lionheart due to ‘going savage.’ Nick basked in the success and even began to believe Judy believed in him, especially when she offered him an application to become her police partner. Unfortunately, she also revealed her prejudices against predators and reminded Nick that no one would ever trust a fox, not even the brightest-eyed, most hopeful animal in the jaded city. He abandoned Judy to the mystery of why animals were going savage in the first place and went back to hustling. Later, she appeared and apologized, begging for his help because she’d realized the predators weren’t going savage for no reason or because they were predators. Nick accepted her apology and gave her another chance, teaming up. Together they uncovered the plot by Assistant Mayor Bellwhether to frame predators for going savage and use prey animals’ fear to keep herself in power. They even used their combined wits to trick her into confession and place her behind bars. Afterward, Nick became the first Fox Officer added to the ZPD force. During a break in cases, Nick was sent back to the Police Academy for more combat training—he’d gotten pretty low marks. While he was away, his partner Judy apparently was sent out on a top-secret mission. Nick was briefed on the Merged Worlds, the war between the Cursed Thorns and the Enchanted Suns, and the fact that Judy hadn’t checked in as usual. Disgruntled at being left behind, the fox set out to do some investigating of his own. the role player alias • Maxine age • pronouns • She, her how did you find us? • Spot other characters •Colleen, Lady Tremaine, Ariel, Hook, Jaribu |
