She spent much of her adolescence sacrificing everything in favor of adventures and trying new things, the most high-spirited of Triton’s daughters. She can be obsessive, clinging to her dreams and what she loves without letting go. She’s kind, seeing the best in others first and able to befriend anyone or anything very easily. She also does not give up easily, as seen on numerous occasions. She can be passionately reckless and is prone to overreaction. When she was young, this manifested itself in dabbling in magic or whatever means necessary to get what she wanted or do what she believed was right, even if it meant sacrificing her fins for legs on the chance of finding love with a stranger and seeing new worlds. Nowadays, it still shows up in her strictness with Melody, mostly for her daughter’s protection, or her outspokenness against Eric’s desire to plunge their kingdom into war. the history overall history • Ariel was always the apple of her father, King Triton’s, eye, possibly because even growing up she had a stubbornness that rivaled his own. This was first out on display when her mother, Athena, was killed by pirates and Triton banned music from the kingdom, broken-hearted that his songbird Love was lost. Ariel got into trouble in her first life-threatening adventure, insisting on playing music and following the music-loving crab Sebastian into exile. After she saved his life from a mentally unhinged rival for his palace position, Triton’s heart softened and he allowed music back into the kingdom. Ariel never got over her sense of adventure. She broke several rules, befriending misfits, dangerous sea creatures, and even enemies of the kingdom as she roamed the ocean and encountered ancient magic, otherworldly creatures, and villains with her friend Flounder, sometimes followed by her more subdued sisters and always by poor, bedraggled Sebastian. Ariel’s greatest adventure came when as a result of seeing humans rescue a pod of dolphins. Humans, the surface, and everything about their world was forbidden by decree of Triton. Ariel became obsessed with them. She collected their things in a secret grotto and visited the surface often, not just to talk to her friend Scuttle, but to catch glimpses of the mysterious, finless creatures. One day she saw Eric, prince of the land-dwellers, and promptly fell in love. He was handsome, energetic, friendly with his dog friend, and full of life even though a stuffy older human kept trying to get him to act like a Prince and not a sailor. All of this she saw in a moment, and it captured her heart. At the same time, lightning struck the ship and it sank. Eric, compassionate and heroic, saved his dog but was knocked unconscious into the sea. Luckily for him, Ariel was waiting. She rescued the human, saw in him the embodiment of everything she wanted to know and learn about humans, and sang to him while he came to on the shore. Eric did not see his rescuer before she disappeared back into the ocean, but he heard her and became similarly obsessed. Ariel’s father found out, and in characteristic temper, destroyed her beloved grotto and forbid her from seeing Eric ever again. Heartbroken, sure her daddy really never would understand her, the teenager swam to Ursula, who transformed her from mermaid into human. The change would only let if Ariel could get Eric to fall in love with her. If not, she belonged to the sea-witch. This was made difficult because as a price, Ursula had taken Ariel’s voice. For the next few days during the time limit, Eric cared for Ariel but did not know she was his rescuer, especially because she was mute. She tried to get him to kiss her with the help of Sebastian and Flounder, and although their attempts were nearly foiled, eventually love won out. Eric learned Ariel was a mermaid but didn’t care, saving her as she had saved him from Ursula by driving a shipwreck into the sea-witch during the final battle. Triton helped Ariel to become a human permanently, and she and Eric were wed. Shortly after, Ariel gave birth to Melody. Their daughter was about to be christened, the first child of land and sea, to the delight of Oceanica and Antlantica alike. Until Morgana, Ursula’s vengeful sister, came and ruined everything. This weaker sea-witch nearly killed Melody and captured Triton’s magical trident in one fell swoop with the help of her shark companion, Undertow, but Eric and Ariel managed to save the infant. Unfortunately, Morgana escaped, and Ariel, suddenly remembering the many magical dangers, not the least of which was this crazy witch, in the sea of her childhood, became paranoid. She and Eric ordered walls to be built, cutting off their kingdom from the sea and choosing to hide Melody from the world of Atlantica and her extended fish family. This was a mistake. Melody loved the sea. She already didn’t connect very well with her mother because of the secrets being kept. At her 14th birthday party she snuck out and found the magical locket her grandfather meant to give her in that very harbor, abandoned. Ariel, distraught that her daughter was disobeying, lost her temper. Melody ran away, and Ariel was among the first to search the seas frantically. Morgana turned Melody into a mermaid in exchange for the girl stealing the trident from her grandfather. Ariel realized the errors of keeping their heritage from her daughter, almost too late, but Melody was able to defeat the sea-witch at the last moment. Ariel was just beginning to adjust to seeing her daughter as a little heroine in the making, sharing the sea and adventure with her, and learning to trust she and Eric’s little Melody. Then the war happened, and all of her old fears were reawakened. She was tired of everything threatening the world she loved so much, including her family. Eric wanted to join the Enchanted Suns and fight for their kingdom before the fight was forced upon them. He was always proactive. But Ariel had just gotten Melody back after nearly losing her. She wanted to finally feel like she had everything she always dreamed of without dangerous creatures trying to take it way. They fought. Ariel still holds this position, increasingly so as Melody seems to get further and further away. She disappears for days at a time, and although Ariel tries to accept it, the scary times are beginning to bring out the overprotective King Triton in her blood yet again. the role player alias • Maxine age • pronouns • She, her how did you find us? • Spot other characters •Colleen, Lady Tremaine, Ariel, Hook, Jaribu, Nick Wild |
