However, it's a thin veneer at best, barely hiding the ruthless, cruel beast he truly is at heart. Well aware of the low reputation rats have, he insists he is, in fact, simply a very large mouse, and is prone to rage when called a rat. However ferocious and brutal his mind may be, he is nonetheless a genius intellect, rivaled only by one Basil of Baker Street, though his enormous ego prevents him from actually acknowledging it. the history overall history • Born to a pair of Irish rats, Lachlann and Deirdre, who immigrated to England shortly before he was born, Padraic spent his early years hard at his studies, as his parents worked hard to be able to provide him with the finest education they could. His mother grew ill and died while he was still a child, and his father often worked long hours to make ends meet. While Ratigan's keen intellect was obvious from a young age, he faced discrimination for being a rat, limiting his education and career opportunities. However, all that changed when his academic achievements netted him a scholarship to attend one of the finest universities in England. Realizing he no longer needed him, Padraic repaid his father's efforts by strangling him, and quietly disposing of his body, along with everything else that tied him to Lachlann. When he arrived at the university, he insisted their records were wrong, and that he was, in fact, merely a large mouse. With no evidence to suggest otherwise, the university didn't pursue the matter, and Ratigan was enrolled as a mouse, with his place of birth listed as a small village in England. Ratigan took to higher learning with a voracity unrivaled by his peers, and he took pleasure in proving not only his intellect, but also his physical prowess, engaging in various sports and boxing along with his academic studies. He took especial interest in studying mathematics, law, and psychology, and eventually graduated with full honors before becoming a Professor of Mathematics at the university, occasionally filling in as a Professor of Law or Psychology as needed. But, despite being secure in his occupation, and drawing a comfortable salary, it wasn't enough of a mental stimulation for his keen mind. He soon turned to amusing himself by manipulating small-time criminals, using them to weave ever-larger illegal schemes, until he was sitting at the center of a vast web of criminal enterprises, with the threat of being fed to his newly-obtained, beloved cat, Felicia, keeping the low-brow thugs in line. While the occasional scheme would fail, nothing could be traced to him, and he didn't care when any of his cronies were caught and arrested, merely moving on to greater and greater escapades. He was initially amused when a young, up and coming private detective named Basil pitted himself against Ratigan's criminal enterprises, seeing it as a mere game at first, only to grow steadily more frustrated when the mouse proved himself to be smarter and more cunning than Ratigan had anticipated. Eventually, Ratigan was forced to flee when Basil began finding ties between himself and his various illegal activities, slipping away before the detective could find enough evidence to make a public accusation. While his public standing was ruined shortly after, amidst a large scandal at the university, Ratigan was now free to devote himself entirely to a life of crime, pulling off such escapades as the Big Ben Caper and the Tower Bridge Job, crimes of such daring and audacity that they made headlines across all of Mousedom, leaving behind a trail of bodies. However, while Ratigan's successes grew, so too did Basil's, and the detective managed to foil several of Ratigan's schemes, and came close on numerous occasions to catching Ratigan himself, though Padraic always managed to slip away. Basil himself likewise managed to escape Ratigan's attempts on his life. A few times, Ratigan toyed with the idea of settling things personally, just the two of them, putting his vastly greater size and strength to full use. But, every time, his ego demanded he prove without a doubt that his mind was the superior intellect. Eventually, driven to top his latest achievements, he began to concoct a truly audacious plan to steal all of Mousedom by becoming consort to the reigning queen. To that end, he kidnapped an unassuming but very clever toy maker named Hiram Flaversham, and had his minions steal uniforms, and clockwork innards from various toys. However, much to his outrage, one of his henchmen, a bat named Fidget, bungled a burglary and alerted Basil that something was afoot, despite Fidget managing to nab Hiram's daughter Olivia to use as leverage against the toy maker. While he initially tossed Fidget to Felicia, in the midst of his subsequent tirade against Basil, he devised a brilliant plan, and ordered the cat to release the hapless bat, giving Fidget one last chance to redeem himself. He would allow Basil to not only discover more of his plot, but also the location of Ratigan's hidden lair in the sewers. Basil took the bait, and Ratigan sprung his trap, delighting in finally having won, proving himself to be the superior mind, and driving the detective into a near-catatonic state before leaving him, and his comrade Dr. Dawson, to die in a deathtrap he'd devised, complete with a camera so he could see the grisly results later on despite his desire to stay and watch Basil's demise in person, but, as he informed Basil before departing, he had an appointment at Buckingham Palace. His plan quickly proceeded, as he replaced the queen with a mechanical lookalike, created and operated by Flaversham, that then appeared before her subjects and officially named Ratigan as her royal consort, while the real queen was smuggled away to be fed to Felicia. However, Ratigan was again foiled by Basil, and he was forced to flee, taking Olivia hostage once again as he took to his personal airship, with the detective in hot pursuit. The chase concluded when Ratigan and Basil crashed into Big Ben's tower, with Olivia still in the rat's grasp. Finally driven to engage Basil personally, Ratigan initially gained the upper hand before Basil managed to trap his cape in the gears of the great clock, and escape with Olivia. Driven into a berserk rage, Ratigan dropped all semblance of civility, and raced after Basil like a feral beast, brutally assaulting the detective with his claws, wounding him severely, and very nearly dragging the mouse to his demise when they both fell from the tower. As he fell, Ratigan had the presence of mind to use his tattered cape as a makeshift parachute, slowing his fall enough to survive. Knowing it was only a matter of time before Basil informed the authorities of the location of his lair, he returned and gathered what henchmen he could find, directing them to ransack his lair in a deliberately sloppy manner before taking them and vanishing with the various treasures he'd gathered, intending to lay low for a time, and let Mousedom believe he'd fallen to his death, before word reached hm of the merging of worlds. Sensing opportunity, Ratigan first secured himself some extra means of protection via acquiring the poison from various frogs that could then be applied to a sharp blade, hidden within a gilded cane. He spent the next few months learning all he could about the Suns and Thorns, and amused himself by divining the existence of the Gilded Wings, making use of his cunning and past experiences to forge a new web of contacts to ensure he was kept informed of whatever might be happening out in the new world. Then, through careful negotiation, he secured himself a comfortable position within the ranks of the Cursed Thorns both vague and prestigious enough to largely be free to operate as he saw fit. the Role play sample N/A the role player alias • Kosmo age • 34 pronouns • Male how did you find us? • Plague other characters • Mufasa, Fergus, Tramp, Jumba, Chief, Scar, Coachman, Ed, Sabor, Pitch Black, Hurken, Bruton, Maid Marian, Gideon Grey, Jenna, Sitron, Hades, Kale, Shen |
