(Right after Kneel in Pieces, open to Rapunzel)
Cassandra leaned over and put her hands on her knees, breathing deep. Despite being used to the weight of her armor and the heat of battle, it was starting to feel heavy and cumbersome. Her armor almost felt oppressive now and Cass could feel sweat drip down her back despite the coolness of the day. They were covered by trees now nearly a half-mile away from the tiny town of Nottingham. Or at least, what was Nottingham. Cass could hear a roar overhead and glanced up to see a crimson dragon soar overhead as if nothing had happened. As if nothing was wrong.
As if she hadn't come back from the dead.
"I don't think we're followed, Raps." Cassandra said, slumping onto a log. After the battle had happened, after they resurrected a beast bigger than anything Rapunzel had saved before, the first thing they had to do was leave. Immediately. A miracle like that being witnessed by that many people wasn't good. Well it wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't good. Raps, as far as Cassandra was aware, was sideless in this war. And if either the Suns or the Thorns caught wind of someone who could bring anything back to life with their magic hair. Well...nothing good could come of it.
Cassandra knew Rapunzel better than anyone else in her life. She knew that Raps was a free spirit. She was a wanderer, a child of the sun. She went where her heart took her and did what she pleased. She wanted to help other people and to make the world a better place.
Cass always saw herself as the opposite. She was dark like the night, brooding and moody. She was regimented and strict. Where Raps was soft, Cass was thorny. Where Raps was a meadow, Cass was a mountain. Neither were bad, but sometimes it came into conflict. Like now.
It had been a long time since Rapunzel had climbed out the window and into the night. It had been a long time since Cass had felt angry and hurt. Both seemed to be dealing with it in their own way. But now was the time for the mountain to meet the meadow. It was time for them to become a valley.
Cass sat on the log, feeling more awkward than she expected. She had played this conversation a million times in her head, over and over, but now presented with the opportunity it felt like she didn't have the words at all. It was a strange paradoxical life that she led, at least part of the time.
"I'm glad you were able to save Dragon," Cass said, staring at the ground. "People back at camp would have been so upset if she didn't come home. Especially the kids. They all took a liking to her." The brunette finally found the courage to look up and face her friend head on.
"So," she said, her voice hardening just a tad. "Where've you been keeping yourself these days? Is it any better out here than Corona?"
