The offer, admittedly, caught Lorelei off guard. Sure, she had people here and there wanting to be friends or whatever - yet it was always in response to lies. It was always to a mask she offered, in which she purposefully presented something she knew they wanted, with the very intention of worming her way into being trusted. She never got handed an offer so freely when she was, essentially, being herself. Much less someone that knew she was a shape-shifting thief and liar. Still, the surprise lingered in her eyes a moment, before it shifted to something more along the vein of suspicion. It seemed a naive enough offer, but then again, she received lies as often as she dealt them out. Who was to say he was any different?
Look out for each other? "Relying on others is foolish, you know," she pointed out, tone a little blunter than before as she eyed him. It was weird how a friendly offer could change her tune to something more wary, but she had never experienced such innocent things. "Always look out for yourself first, that's what everyone else is doing."
Crossing her arms almost defensively, she watched him for a moment, as though monitoring his reactions. This kid came across as a little too soft for part of an evil army, and it unnerved her. It was instinct to assume it was an act, because someone just prancing around offering friendship and smiles without ulterior motives just made no sense to her. Still, he seemed the pretty open type...maybe he had a reason that made sense. Something he gained from the offer beyond them being indifferent of each other.
Rather than accepting or denying the offer, emerald eyes narrowed skeptically and she leaned a little closer, studying is own blue orbs. "Why?" Lorelei probably came off as terribly strange, but that was not much of a concern for her honestly. Instead she found herself trying to decipher this situation, one that probably did not need such close inspection at all. As ordinarily human as all those she grew up around, this boy was terribly foreign compared to what she was used to. The nicest anyone had been to her knowing what she was had been fellow foster children playing on a once desperate desire for acceptance, just to make their lives better and her own worse. "What's in it for you?"
