Night time, Fort Chambord. Open to Belle, Aladdin, and any of the other members of the Chambrod team. Only a few seconds after Dodger leaves the scene. Continuation of Best of Sport and Game.
“Over here, hurry!”
There was an urgency in the little cocker spaniel's voice as her paws carried her with great dexterity down the slopes. The light from her lantern bouncing and spiraling around her in a soft orange glow. The hillside was wet, damp, and slippery. Thick brush had grown all around, spilling over the stone and gravel that had long ago fallen when the foundations for the castle's bridge were chiseled out of the great mountainside that supported it's ramparts. Twigs and branches clawed at her fur, and tangled in her ears. Yet Lady pushed forwards. A sudden feeling of dread and imperativeness had clutched the dog's heart for reasons she did not quite understand, as she plunged into the darkening night.
It had all started only but a mere five minutes ago, when all in her world seemed at peace. As the sky above the citadel was turning into a deep blue tapestry of stars, the graceful canine found herself wondering almost aimlessly among the gardens and grounds. Gently dipping her nose among the flowers, or stopping to examine a statue. The group from Arendelle had arrived sometime back, and her only description of the trip thus far had been; uneventful. Really, so far the war as a whole had seemed nothing but a distant rumble. Akin to far off thunder. Nothing but talk, preparedness, and the occasional flare up of rumors. While the white feather of fur on Angel's leg, and the ongoing tension that seemed to cover the world like a thick blanket were constant reminders of the contrary, Lady had yet to see anything remotely concerning. If anything, she had found herself starting to long for the company of her Tramp. Not that she was not enjoying her time with the very amiable Belle and the wonderful staff at the Castle. She was only looking forward longingly to the call to return to Arendelle so she could stand once again by his handsome gray furred side. It was these thoughts that carried her outside to be alone. Letting the cool night air remind her of another evening long ago, when she wandered behind an Italian restaurant with a soon to be lover. Without much thought, she found herself putting her forpaws on the edge of the stone bridge and standing up on her hind legs to peek over it's stone banister. From her view high above the valley, she could see the waterfall, it's splash pool, and the brush far below.
That was when she saw it. A dog, clambering up the bank. The spaniel's eye brows rose, and she craned her head, hind legs staining to top her ever higher to witness. She couldn't tell much about him. Other then that she did not recognize him in the slightest. If it wasn't for his white fur, she might not have spotted him against the evening shadows that stretched across the valley. However, something about him seemed amiss. He seemed as if was carrying himself as if he was running from something. Or at least, to her eyes it seemed that way.
It could be nothing. Only a stray. Lord knew how many of them still wondered the streets and back-allies of the world. She only had to ask the Tramp about that. She should just chalk it up to something unusual in the night, and head back inside.
Yet, that was just it...he was unusual.
Scampering back towards the castle, the spaniel started barking. Calling for the mistress of Chambrod. As soon as she had Belle's attention, the spaniel jogged from the big oak doors and out into the night. Stopping only to snatch an oil lamp from one of the outside lamp holders in her jaws. From there, the more she descended from the grounds down into the valley, the deeper and deeper she felt she was getting into something. Her motherly instincts going into overdrive. Using her shoulders to push her way and clear a path that anyone behind her could follow. The air was damp, and the closer she came to the river and it's splash pool, the more she could feel a gentle mist hit her fur.
“He was down here! I think!” She spoke from around the iron handle of the lamp.
Already she was far ahead of anyone who could be following. Her sporting breed speed and agility coming into it's own. As she reached the edge of the bank, just behind one of the great stone columns that supported the bridge, her nose was assaulted by a heavy scent of hot iron. It was a smell that she usually associated with the butcher's market. When Jim Dear would walk her past it's open doors back home. She recognized it as the stench of fresh blood. Dropping the lantern on it's feet atop a rock, the cocker stepped into the cool waters of the river and it's splash pool. The slowly moving water was channeled around several large boulders and a blanket of mist prevented her from seeing beyond them. Lady could feel her heart in her chest. Something was not right.
“Hey! Anyone back there...I'm going to bark!” She called, feeling sort of stupid that she would announce herself vocally before doing so as a canine would. Her voice echoing off the vaulted stone.
“Belle, anyone!” She turned her head and called back over her shoulder. Her stubby tail quivered as unease gripped her pumping heart. Looking down at the water that swirled around her forelegs, she could see thin tendrils of black slowly floating around her. “I think I may have found something!”
