The cool eyes of Nala were swooped in concern and alarm. The quick movements of her pale head were not unlike a cat following the back-and-forth of a piece of string...but far less playful. She tracked the movements of people screaming and dying in the human streets, the ones she had expected to be peaceful upon arrival.
It had been a calm, if exciting morning on the journey from the Great Forest to this city. She had spent much of it in a romp, following the shadow of her latest friend, Dragon, as she soared overhead. Nala had been glad not only for the excuse to meet the giant mother her son, Kopa, had met at the Festival, but also to just run. Run, full tilt, and get her huntress’ blood flowing through every sinew of her body again. Even if it couldn’t be in her beloved Pridelands, it was enough to race her new acquaintence and feel the cubbish excitement in a new destination to explore at the end of it.
And this was what they’d found.
Quickly, the big cat’s eyes fixed upon a hyena. All at once, the situation took shape in the Queen’s mind out of confusion. These were Thorns. Scar and Zira’s forces were here, in this human cluster, and murdering people as if they were no more than gazelles trapped in tar. She swung to call up to her huge, pink ally. It would be hard for Dragon to enter the town fully; even with her reduced size, she may not be able to help wrecking these structures. But her abilities were fierce. She had heard that they included actually breathing fire like the heavens during the rainy season. The Queen had a flash of the Elephant strategy to protect. They would create a barrier with their own bodies and keep their calves at the center of it.
“Dragon!” Called the serene voice, now sharp with command. “Land at the far edge of town. Protect the people who run to you!” That was all she could do. She didn’t know Dragon well, and didn’t know if her order would be obeyed or even heard. But she couldn’t keep the fiery, righteous violence in her limbs from throwing her forward into the action any longer.
Nala was a cream-colored blur, her black lips squared around bared teeth, sprinting down the bloody street and around stampeding humans. “Go to the dragon! She’ll protect you! Go!” Snarled the Princess as she traveled. Her gaze snagged on Audrey and the sound of her weapon actually brought Nala to a bundling halt. They had more allies here. Good! Nala took in Cassandra and Colleen huddled in a shut doorway with three refugees, a short distance from where Audrey stood alone. A Thorn was bearing down on them.
The fearsome lioness’ first thought was to pounce and roll the villain right off of his mount and finish him off. But she couldn’t shake the smell of the hyena’s blood from her snout, further down. He and some pink creature were unchallenged. “Audrey! Not him!” There wasn’t time to elaborate. Cassandra could take care of herself, with that long tooth humans used. She was moving again, calling back to the slower woman. “The pink monster! Get her!”
As for Nala, within three more bounds her snarl was in the face of the dopey hyena. Oh, she’d been waiting to get her claws into a stinking, spotted scavenger since the fall of the Pridelands. Nala leaped, and as she leaped at Ed, she swung a club-like paw at his stupid mug.
