At last, after what felt like a desperate eternity, the two children responded. Sunray stood firm, an orange beacon promising safety amidst the carnage roaring all around; and, leading her younger sibling by the hand, the older child scurried to close the distance to the equine's side. Both children had eyes wide with fear, and the sensitive Pegasus' heart ached for them, but the older girl seemed to recognise that he was their most immediate hope. As they crossed to him, Sunray forced himself to remain still; as aware as he was of the danger all around, he didn't want to move suddenly and spook them. Rather, he lowered his head to the two children, dark eyes offering what reassurance they could.
He let the leading girl reach up and touch his muzzle gently.
That gesture, small though it was, seemed to be enough to convince the child that he was safe. Though she still trembled, the girl drew herself up tall as she faced him, holding her sibling close, and her voice was clear and deliberate.
"Please, Mister Horse. Will you rescue us?"
It was in that moment, Sunray was sure he'd do absolutely anything if it meant protecting these kids.
"I'll get you out of her. Come on: onto my back."
Was this the right way to talk to children? Sunray honestly hadn't a clue.
That was, honestly, easier said than done; the Pegasus felt small hands pulling on his mane and feathers as the pair did their best to clamber onto his back, which must have seemed impossibly high up to them. Still, while Sunray winced a little, the male didn't protest; instead, simply doing his best to nudge them into place with his nose. The end result was... uncomfortable, but serviceable.
As soon as he made sure his passengers were secure, the Pegasus leapt skyward again, making himself airborne. Never before had he carried anyone except Orchid, and certainly not in this manner, and he desperately hoped that the children were up to holding on. It would be a delicate balance, of course, between keeping his flight steady enough not to unseat them and evasive enough to avoid becoming a target.
For now, he focused just on going upwards out of reach of the dragon and the sorcerer and any other ranged attackers. Once that was done, he'd find a safe area to set these two down, then go back in to see if he could rescue anyone else... though that, of course, very much assumed that he didn't get shot at before he could do so.
( ooc: if anyone does want to take a shot at Sunray, you're welcome to! Otherwise, I'll just let him keep on doing what he's doing ^^ )
